– Have some change on you because in certain parts of Europe the public washrooms are not free. They typically cost about 0.50 – 1 euro.
– Be very careful about your phone and wallet on public transit and big crowds as pickpocket is an issue
– Cant hurt to bring a portable battery pack in case your phone runs out of battery
– Pack comfortable shoes, lots of walking
Thing to Know
Travel Documentation: Canadians and US citizens do not need a visa for up to 90 days. Please note passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond the date of travel
Language: The official language of Portugal is Portuguese. English is commonly spoken in tourist areas, hotels, restaurants and shops, particularly in larger cities like Lisbon and Porto.
Money: The official currency of Portugal is the EURO. When I was in Lisbon majority of the restaurants I visited did not accept cash, only debit or credit.
Outlet: Be sure to purchase a travel adapter as the voltage if different in Europe than Canada/US. In Europe it is 220V – 240V whereas in Canada it is 120V
Cellphone Use:
You have a few options when it comes to using your phone.
WIFI only – In large European cities there is free WIFI in most, if not all the cafes, restaurants, shopping malls and more. You can easily get around the city with only WIFI.
Airlo – This is an application that provides you with an E-SIM. You just purchase the data plan you require, follow the instructions and you can use your E-SIM once you get to your destination. This is only for data.
Roam-like-home – A lot of phone plans have a flat rate you pay every day and you can use your phone like you do in your home country.
SIM – You can look for a carrier once you land and get a pre-paid data plan with them.
